The Meaning Behind Covenant
My faith is an important part of who I am and how I approach my work. When choosing a name for my business, I wanted it to reflect something deeper than a transaction.
A contract defines an agreement. A covenant represents a relationship built on trust, commitment, and integrity.
That is the kind of relationship I want to build with every client. My goal is not simply to complete a report or consultation. I want to become a trusted resource—someone attorneys and healthcare leaders can depend on for honest analysis, clear communication, and ongoing support.
Covenant Legal Nurse Consulting was built on that commitment.
The Experience Behind the Analysis
My career has taught me that the most important information is not always obvious.
During my time in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, I learned how to assess critically ill patients, recognize changes in condition, establish priorities, manage risk, and make thoughtful decisions under pressure. Caring for multiple complex patients also taught me how to anticipate needs and use every available moment effectively without losing sight of the larger clinical picture.
My nursing education created the foundation for that approach. I was trained to complete thorough assessments, provide comprehensive care, and document in a way that could clearly support the care delivered. The expectations were demanding, but they made me a stronger and more accountable nurse.
Those lessons continue to shape how I analyze medical records today:
- What does the documentation establish?
- What information is missing?
- Are the different accounts consistent?
- Do the injuries align with the reported event?
- What happened before, during, and after the incident?
- Is there another document or source that could provide additional context?
- What questions still need to be answered?
I do not stop at what is immediately visible. I look for the connections, inconsistencies, documentation gaps, and contributing factors needed to understand the complete medical story.
From Clinical Care to Healthcare Leadership
My career in home healthcare progressed quickly. Within approximately a year and a half, I advanced from field nurse to clinical supervisor and then to Director of Clinical Services. I later served in leadership roles that included Clinical Manager, Operations Manager, and Administrator.
These positions required me to understand much more than clinical care. I became responsible for operations, staffing, documentation, regulatory compliance, audits, investigations, quality assurance, corrective action, employee education, and process improvement.
When Maxim Healthcare pursued accreditation, the San Antonio office I led was selected to participate in the Accreditation Commission for Health Care’s Deemed Status process. Our Medicare-certified office was the first within the organization to undergo the audit process and was held to rigorous regulatory and accreditation standards.
Preparing for that audit required me to evaluate our operations independently, respond to findings, communicate regularly with corporate leadership, and determine whether policies, forms, and internal processes needed to be created or revised.
Every audit became an opportunity to improve.
When a deficiency was identified, I did not want to simply correct that individual finding. I conducted a root-cause analysis:
- Why did the deficiency occur?
- Was it an isolated mistake or a breakdown in the system?
- Did a policy need to be clarified?
- Was additional education required?
- Would a checklist or monitoring process prevent it from happening again?
I also attended annual state training and followed regulatory updates so our systems could evolve as healthcare requirements changed.
That experience taught me an important principle: strong compliance is not created in the days before an audit. It is built into the agency’s everyday systems, documentation, communication, and accountability.
Investigations Grounded in Facts
Healthcare investigations reinforced the importance of remaining objective.
There may be a patient or family’s account, a nurse’s account, and other perspectives from those involved. My responsibility was to listen carefully, review the available evidence, and determine what the documentation supported.
Depending on the incident, I reviewed medical records, assessments, photographs, employee files, policies, training records, and other available evidence. I then prepared a factual summary for the organization’s legal and human resources departments.
Together, we evaluated the findings and determined the appropriate next steps. Those decisions could include no action, re-education, disciplinary action, termination, or reporting to a regulatory agency or board of nursing.
I also worked directly with state agencies and submitted investigative findings within strict regulatory deadlines. That experience strengthened my ability to remain unbiased, protect confidentiality, identify missing information, and communicate complicated findings clearly.
The same principles guide my consulting work today: examine the evidence, ask the necessary questions, and follow the facts wherever they lead.

In personal injury matters, I review records for issues such as:

For Pediatric Home Health and Therapy Organizations
I help pediatric home health and pediatric therapy organizations strengthen the clinical and operational systems that support compliant, efficient, and safe care.
My experience includes helping develop a pediatric therapy program from the ground up, including its forms, workflows, operational structure, and compliance-monitoring processes.
When reviewing an incident or organizational concern, I consider questions such as:
- What occurred before, during, and after the incident?
- Did the clinician receive the training needed to care for the patient safely?
- Is the employee’s personnel file complete?
- Were the agency’s policies followed?
- Is additional education or competency validation required?
- Does the documentation support medical necessity?
- Were the appropriate billing codes and modifiers used?
- Is the issue clinical, operational, or a combination of both?
- What system changes could reduce the likelihood of recurrence?
This combined clinical and operational perspective allows me to help organizations address the immediate concern while also identifying improvements that may strengthen the agency moving forward.

Protecting sensitive medical, legal, and business information has been central to my work throughout my nursing and consulting career.

I have spent my career working within interdisciplinary teams. When a matter requires expertise beyond my scope, I can also draw upon a trusted professional network for additional support.
